I am considering writing a post once a week in which I will list some interesting articles I have read in news papers and on the web that illustrate where our culture is headed. I will give a brief synopsis of the article and provide links for further reading. Most of the articles will likely be news articles but I hope to include some opinion editorials and cultural commentaries of import.
I think its important for us as Christians to be aware of the world around us and to respond to the world from a biblically informed perspective. Thus many of the articles I will link to in “The Cultural Thermometer” will address the depravity of our culture.
1. Transgender Man Can Keep his Post as Pastor:An article from the Baltimore Sun reports that the United Methodist Church announced that a Transgender man, the Rev. Drew Phoenix (formerly Ann Gordon) may keep his post as Pastor of a church in Charles Village. Phoenix said, “To me, it’s a historic day in the life of our denomination, and I think the Judicial Council decision is a very important first step in opening the doors of our churches to the transgender community.” I think its a historic day for the United Methodist Church in regards to their abandonment of the authority of Scripture.
2. Preteens Trading Fairy Wands for Fishnets: Anyone who has been following the trends in Halloween costumes knows that girl’s costumes are getting trashier by the year. This disturbing article reports that trashy costumes are being adorned by younger and younger girls and it was featured on the front page of the Washington Post! There is much that could be said here, but I will simply say that this is a call for Christian parents know what their children are wearing and what is being marketed to them.
3. More Pets Dressed to Chill for Halloween: Another interesting Halloween story. This article from USA Today reports that 7% of Americans are buying Halloween costumes for their pets! This might not be such a big deal if it weren’t for the fact that nearly 90% of dog owners said they think of their dogs “like a child or family member,” according to the American Kennel Club. Further, Americans spend a reported $41 billion dollars on their pets. This has opened up a whole new set of businesses, doggie spas, doggie fashion shows, and pet boutiques (if you think I am kidding read the article!). And if you are wondering, the answer is yes–yes it bothers me that we are treating pets more and more like children.
Apparently our culture celebrates Halloween by letting our children dress like skanks and dressing our dogs like children. These developments should disturb you.
4. What the New Atheists Don’t See: This article from City Journal, is by
Here is a great except from Dalrymple’s article concerning Dawkins’ book, The God Delusion:
In ‘The God Delusion’, Richard Dawkins quotes with approval a new set of Ten Commandments for atheists, which he obtained from an atheist website, without considering odd the idea that atheists require commandments at all, let alone precisely ten of them; nor does their metaphysical status seem to worry him. The last of the atheist’s Ten Commandments ends with the following: “Question everything.” Everything? Including the need to question everything, and so on ad infinitum?
